Sherwood Hardware is an old-school hardware store, no air conditioning, just big ceiling fans and in an old school neighborhood. It goes against the grain of the big box hardware stores such as Ace, Home Depot and Lowe's, but it keeps on plugging away on Moncrief Road and will be celebrating it's 50th year in business next month.

Velobrew Cycling Hosts Brooks Rehab Cyclists

In Tuesday's final race of the Velobrew Racing Team of Jacksonville's Summer Criterium Series at the Morocco Shrine Center, members of the Brooks Rehabilitation Hand-Cycle Team and the First Coast Falcons Hand Cycle Team were hosted in their own specialty race around the center's parking lot. Winner was Tim Conner, 29, of Hilliard, a US Marine and professional motocross rider injured a year ago at the Motocross National race in Texas. Conner, a 2000 graduate of Hilliard High School, had injured his spine in a 60 foot motocross jump crash.

With teams from Cocoa Beach and Ocoee, the annual Jacksonville University Team Football Camp was a full pads and hitting early summer pigskin extravaganza despite the searing heat. Athletes were treated to overnight accommodations and up to three practice sessions with the Pioneer League champions coaching staff. Head Coach Kerwin Bell was on hand as well as his entire coaching staff including Jerry Odom, Andy McLeod, Ernie Logan, Ernie Mills and Kerry Webb to encourage the high school aged campers to work hard toward this fall's season.

Wolfson earned top honors for the boys teams with a total of 142, and the Stanton girls brought the first place trophy home with a score of 201.

Fletcher High hosted the "Gateway Conference For Wrestling" on Saturday at Fletcher Gym, with a huge crowd of fans cheering on. Most of Duval County high schools participated. Semi finals were held Saturday morning. Winners from the morning session advanced to the finals Saturday night. Some of the schools that made it to the finals were Fletcher, Stanton, Raines, Terry Parker Andrew Jackson, Mandarin and many more. Emotions ran high from the crowd, coaches and wrestlers as macthes progressed towards end of the night.

Run 5 For Wolfson Children's Hospital

Runners got a chance to sleep in and make a 2 p.m. race start at the Jacksonville Landing as the Run 5 To Keep Kids Alive made its way around the downtown area with a two bridge ascent: Acosta and Main bridges, before finishing on the Riverwalk by the Times Union Center. Staged by 1st Place Sports, the race benefitted Wolfson's Children's Hospital. Overall winner was Paul McRae of Jacksonville with a time of 28 minutes, 37 seconds. Female winner was Rebecca Chandler of Jacksonville in 33:57.

Second day action at the annual Baker County Christmas Boys Basketball Tournament held Dec. 28-30 at Baker County High School featured the Ridgeview High's Panthers winning 62-55 in a hard fought game against Nathan B. Forrest High. Forrest will play Thursday at 6 pm against St. Augustine for third place. Ridgeview will play Middleburg, winner against St. Augustine, on Thursday at 8pm for the tournament title.

Chestnut Firm gives away FREE Gas

The Chestnut Law Firm of Jacksonville gave away 750 gallons of free gas to the community as part of its second annual We Care Campaign Gas Giveaway. Volunteers from the Chestnut Law Firm and community leaders pumped gas for drivers and wished them happy holidays. Each vehicle received 10 free gallons of gas. The event was a way for the Chestnut Law Firm to give back to the community and show them they care, especially during the holiday season.

Duval County SWAT Practices City Council Rules

The Duval County SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco) team and members of the Duval County Department of Health got a hands-on look on the parliamentary procedures of the Jacksonville City Council complete with a visit to the council chambers and a chat with Mayor John Peyton's chief of staff Adam Hollingsworth. Students attending were from Southside Middle School, Paxon High School, Sandalwood High School, Englewood High School and the Jacksonville Job Corps. A state-wide government affairs consultant and social issues advocate, Matt Justice, gave the group a step-by-step, hands-on tutorial on parliamentary procedure according to Robert's Rules. The Tobacco Free Jacksonville coalition is attempting to inform local politicians on the dangers of candy-flavored tobacco products and the targeting of young children by the industry.

Vietnam Vets Ride For Toys for Tots

Local chapters of Vietnam Veterans and Legacy Motorcycle clubs gathered Saturday morning across from the Orange Park Dog Track to participate in the 25th annual Toys for Tots ride to benefit the J.P. Hall Charities. Riders brought presents to be delivered to Clay County children this week. Since 1981 the J.P. Hall, Sr. children's Charity has been giving away toys at Christmas time. The first year, 75 children received toys from the newly formed charity. Now, more that two decades later, more than 2,500 children flock to the Clay County Fairgrounds each year to benefit from the annual event. This year's event is scheduled for Sat., Dec. 18 at the Fairgrounds.

Bolles at First Coast High School Football

The Bolles Bulldogs crossed the river to meet the First Coast Buccaneers for the Kickoff Classic game preparing both teams for the upcoming season. Each team was able to get most of their players in on at least a series on the wet field, giving the coaches an opportunity to evaluate players. First Coast came out the winner at the end of the varsity portion of the game with a final score of 19-16.
